Georgia Marshall: Humans for Good

06th October 2021 / City

My name is Georgia. I’ve been a part of the Anchor family for four years now, and have been working with startups for around the same amount of time.

I’m currently in the process of launching a side hustle called Humans For Good. I’ve been building this for a while (it’s kept me sane during lockdown), so am excited to finally share it with the world

What’s it about?

According to the Awareness to Action report, 66% of young Australians reported feeling uncertain or anxious about the future. Only 7% would say that they are confident.

The vision for Humans For Good is to make it easier to make a difference. Currently, this looks like a database of creative ways to do good for people and the planet. ‘Humans for good’ can find and share actions, resources, and communities that have a positive impact.

I hope to bridge the gap between caring, and doing, and down the track, we’re looking at running online programs that achieve this same goal.

Where did this idea come from?

My faith, career in startups, and passion for social innovation have all been huge catalysts behind Humans For Good.

Like others, I have felt pretty disempowered and overwhelmed when faced by huge global problems. However, I came to a bunch of realisations around the same time, which led me to start the project.

  1. Our life’s priority is to love God and others. It sounds obvious, but it hit me that you feel good when you do good, because it’s how we’re designed and meant to live.
  2. ‘Imperfect action is better than perfect inaction.’ I felt guilty that my lifestyle didn’t fully match my values, but decided that I have to start somewhere.
  3. There are so many random, creative ways to do good. I was working with incredible social enterprises that many of my friends had never come across, and that I loved sharing.
  4. Even small actions can have a huge impact. For example, I promoted a business called Xceptional via a newsletter. This led to a young adult on the autism spectrum getting his first job despite the fact that he wasn’t able to leave the house.
  5. My favourite thing to do is connect great people with great opportunities, and each other. I thought it’d be pretty cool to scale this via a platform.

And so with all of the above in mind, I decided to build something that allowed me to increase my impact, and hopefully help others to do the same.

I am very conscious that over 90% of startups don’t work out, so starting Humans For Good has required me to let go of my perfectionism and any fears around failure, and trust that whatever happens is meant to happen. It’s been challenging, but I’ve learned so much already.

Where to now?

I’m balancing Humans For Good with a full-time job, so massively appreciate any support with spreading the word! If you find something helpful via the database, I’d love it if you could let me know.
